Nanowrimo is down (what a shock)
So after all the extra computer hardware and database capacity that the nanowrimo folks put into improving the site this year, on the day of the official re-launch of the web page the site is down. Due to a hard drive failing, of all things (despite the error message saying the site is overloaded).

If you're a nano participant, you can follow their repair efforts here: http://twitter.com/nanowrimo

They are in the process of restoring backups and running on just one database server instead of two, and expect the site back up sometime today. Eventually they'll get the second database server back up.

UPDATE: Site is back up, but still a little wonky. As of 1:15pm, you can't log in.

NaNoWriMo Web Site fixed!
If you haven't checked out the website lately, and you haven't affiliated with the California :: South Bay region (and thus gotten my regional email on the subject), and you are interested in nanowrimo, the website (http://www.nanowrimo.org) is fixed! Woo-hoo!

For California :: South Bay nanos wondering about the site
Okay, nanowrimo.org is really, really slow of late. Record-breaking, precedent-shatteringly slow. Here's what's happening, in a nutshell, to try and fix the slowness:

On Tuesday certain features that aren't available to the general public will be disabled. The system for dealing with those features is the prime suspect in the slowdown. By the end of the day, we'll know if our prime suspect is indeed guilty. If it is, things should pick up considerably on the site. If not, well, keep your fingers crossed we've got the right system under suspicion.

I'm sure we'll all be laughing about this come November 1st. Really. Knock on wood and fingers crossed.

Attention South Bay Nanos
In case you're a south bay nano and not reading the nano forums yet, it looks like there's going to be a Wednesday night write-in, starting tonight. Details can be found in the nano forums (http://www.nanowrimo.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=33159&forum=208), but it's in Mountain View, starting around 6:30/7pm at Books Inc. (on Castro Street), and so far only one person is guaranteed to be there. FYI.

(Yes, it's only September and nano has apparently already started.)

COUGH, GASP, can't breathe...fumes overwhelming me...so noxious...
Spent my lunch hour getting the car warmed up and pre-tested for smog. Yay! It passed the pre-test! All that work, sweat, and blood seems to be paying off. The idle needs to be set back a bit, but that's easy. The garage didn't have a dynamo, so they couldn't test for NOX output, but everything else passed. I'll just have to hope and pray about the dynamo test. Dare I let a little optimism creep into my spirit? I'll set back the idle tonight and call a test-only center tomorrow to make an appointment. Fingers crossed.

VROOM VROOM!
Damn! I'd forgotten how much FUN driving the TR8 is! Especially with the top down, a cool sunny day above you, and a responsive gas pedal underfoot! Damn! My dad told me that he used to swear up and down while working on his Austin Healy that it just wasn't worth the effort, and he was going to sell it. Then he'd drive the car.... I know exactly how he felt.

Walked by the coffee machine after lunch and there were two boxes of leftover donuts. I was full, and I still wanted to gobble them up. Temptation comes with sprinkles...mmmm, sprinkles.

Parents took me out to dinner last night. Oh really, and just where did you go, not that I care?Collapse )

After dinner, worked on the TR8 for the pending doom. Oh no! What"s that, and what would Indiana do??Collapse )

Everything else is a remake these days, why not bring it back?
I was such a die-hard fan as a kid of this show. Watching the occasional repeat as a adult, I can't help but cringe at the terrible production values, but nostalgia conquers all. Of course, God only knows when it will reach US shores....

The benefits of good oral hygiene
Have you ever brushed your teeth a little too vigorously, and then SHAZAM!, the toothbrush head goes astray and those tiny bristles stampede over your soft, delicate gums and inner cheek lining, gouging a swath of cankerous destruction? And then the damaged tissue swells until it encroaches on your 'chew space' so that, for the next two weeks, you keep biting the wound when you eat, aggravating it and causing more swelling? And when you're done eating and want to wash down that meal, every beverage you swill, hot or cold, sends stabbing shards of agony resonating throughout your entire mouth?

I REALLY hate when that happens!

Accomplishments from SundayCollapse )

I'm in a surprisingly good mood given it's a Monday, and my car could break down at any moment and strand me. Why do I never have this fortitude of well-being when the chips are really down?

I relish the sight of those monkeys scrambling off my back and beating a hasty retreat back into the bush. May lightening strike and start a fire, cooking them in their own monkey fat.

Guess I chose the wrong time to quit sniffing glue!
Fribbity bibbity! This vendor rep I've never heard of before (but who works for a company I do interact with) has been calling me and leaving long, drawn-out, disjointed voicemails. The nonsensical "details".Collapse )

Maybe the guy's working around a lot of solvents or something.
